Welcome to the 2023 Design Awards! This year's Design Awards Ceremony will be held at The Highlawn in West Orange, on September 14th at 6pm. Celebrate the architectural achievements of DA participants! Enjoy networking, dinner, drinks, the awards presentation, and a course by Douglas Kallfelz, AIA, on Community Resiliency. What's not to like?!

The Course: Community Resiliency: Challenges and techniques for delivering attainable housing

Douglas's presentation will share examples of successful implementation of attainable housing highlighting unique approaches to community outreach efforts, successful regulatory changes as well as specific planning & building design techniques that support attainable housing development.

As Managing Partner at Union Studio, Douglas oversees the management and strategic direction of the firm. He works directly with client leaders on a wide range of projects and has been the primary architect and principal-in-charge for many of the firm’s award-winning sustainable communities, civic buildings, and student housing. With over two decades of experience across a broad range of building types, Douglas brings a unique blend of business acumen, technical expertise, and design skill to the projects and clients he serves. With the help of Douglas’ leadership, Union has expanded its team of professionals and earned a reputation regionally and nationally for bringing exceptional community design expertise and vision to complex projects throughout the country. He has spoken nationally on a variety of subjects and is committed to bringing lasting contributions to the clients and communities that Union serves.

Douglas is a member of the advisory board for the ACE Mentorship Program of Rhode Island, a LEED accredited professional, a member of the Congress for the New Urbanism, and past president of the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Douglas received his Bachelor of Architecture from Syracuse University, where he graduated with Honors, and his Master of Design Studies with a focus on real estate finance and strategic management from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
