Our New Member Spotlight series continues as we introduce Kristen Peka, Assoc. AIA!
Through this series, we’re highlighting some of the newest members of AIA Newark & Suburban Architects and giving our community the opportunity to learn more about their backgrounds, interests, experiences, and professional journeys.
A special thank you to Kristen for taking part and sharing her story with us.
Kristen Peka is an emerging Project Designer who has experience in both Project Management and Design. Kristen is passionate about learning, collaborating, and bringing ideas from concept to reality. With strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills, Kristen is a dedicated, team-oriented professional who is committed to continuous growth, embraces new challenges, and values learning from the people and experiences around her.
Tell us a little about yourself and your current role.
I grew up in Chanhassen, Minnesota. I graduated from college with Cum Laude and Honors from Iowa State University in December 2024, majoring in Architecture and Environmental Studies and minoring in Urban Design and Entrepreneurship. After graduation, I moved to New Jersey, where I currently work as a Project Designer at Thomas Baio Architect in Millburn. There, we focus primarily on residential design and construction documentation.
What inspired you to pursue a career in architecture?
I attribute my inspiration and love for architecture to my mom. She worked as a Software Engineer with an Architectural firm formerly known as The Weidt Group. While there, she helped develop and support Andersen Windows CADDI software for architects. Growing up, my sister and I spent a lot of time after hours at her office - we did our homework in the conference room, ran around the office, played hide-and-seek, left notes on our favorite architects' and engineers' desks, and attended the company's yearly cabin trip to Wisconsin for a weekend, with all the employees and their families. We also enjoyed visiting the local Parade of Homes tour, where I was introduced to different architectural styles through residential design. Looking back on these positive experiences from my childhood, I believe they have truly inspired me to pursue a career in architecture.
What project, class, or experience has had the biggest impact on your development so far?
In the early stages of my career, I would say each of my projects has played an important role in my development as a designer. Every project allowed me to learn, grow, and reflect on previous mistakes - some more challenging than others. The biggest impact on my development has been visiting construction sites, learning from my principal architect, co-workers, and contractors, and ultimately seeing how a project translates from construction plans into a built reality. Having a deeper understanding of the building process makes me a better designer by helping me anticipate challenges and apply lessons learned to future projects.
What area of architecture are you most interested in exploring as your career grows?
Growing up, I have always been interested in residential architecture. Little did I know how broad architecture really is. Moving forward, I am focused on obtaining my license and exploring all opportunities that present themselves throughout my career.
What excites you most about the future of the profession?
I am excited to see how advancements in technology and AI will continue to impact our profession. I am curious to see how people will use it as a tool to generate new ideas and what impact it will have on the future of design and construction processes. Although it is still in the early stages, firms are already learning to use AI to advance their projects and designs.
Why did you decide to join AIA Newark & Suburban Architects?
I first joined AIAS through Iowa State University, where I participated in events, firm tours, and networking opportunities to help support my education and professional development. After seeing the value of connecting with industry professionals, joining the AIA Newark & Suburban Chapter felt like a natural step to continue growing, learning, and building connections within the profession.
Who has been an important mentor or influence in your architectural journey?
Tom Baio is an important mentor to me. He has a huge influence on the start of my Architecture career. He encourages me to learn as much as I can, reminding me that no matter where I am in life and in my career, there is always more to learn. He encourages me to get involved in architecture from a municipal government standpoint, to fully immerse myself in the profession, and to surround myself with people who continue to challenge and inspire me. Most importantly, Tom teaches me that failure is a natural part of the profession, and that growth comes from how you learn, adapt, and move forward from those experiences. Thank you, Tom, for your guidance, mentorship, and the impact you have on my architectural journey every day!
What is one piece of advice you would give to architecture students or emerging professionals?
You are not going to know everything when you graduate and begin working in the profession - and that is okay. The transition can be challenging, and imposter syndrome is real, but it does get better with time and experience. Do not be afraid to ask questions, speak up, seek guidance, and learn as much as you can from the people and experiences around you. People genuinely do want to help.
When you're not working or studying architecture, what do you enjoy doing?
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my dog, Zoey, a 4-year-old white German Shepherd. I love to travel and be outside, whether that is walking Zoey, hiking, paddleboarding, working out at the gym, playing in a slow-pitch softball league, participating in sports, or lying by the pool!
